Our perception of our body can start at a tender age. This continues to evolve as we grow older. Body image can become more evident and problematic as individuals enter adolescence. There are many factors that may influence the process of creating body image, with parents, siblings, society and peers playing pivotal roles in the process.
Not every teenager is satisfied with the way they look or feel about themselves. It is not unusual for an adolescent to want a perfect body and clear, flawless skin. This can be said regardless of gender. Most teens have an ideal image that they feel they must live up to. When your child seems especially dissatisfied with the way they look this can be very upsetting. If this mindset is becoming a persistent worry, impacting their self-esteem, your teen could be having body image issues.
Understanding Teen Body Image
Most of us understand that looking perfect is not everything. In time, beauty fades. Though we may know this it can still be something we strive for. This can be even more problematic for teens. It can be difficult for them to understand what is truly important as many focus on image as they are struggling to find a sense of self. During this stage of development it can be difficult to change their beliefs which can further impact the way they view themselves and their body image.
What is body image? “Body image is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or when you picture yourself in your mind,” according to the National Eating Disorders (NEDA). It “… is the way you perceive your body, and the thoughts and feelings you have based on that,” contributes Reach Out.com. This can also impact their opinions about their body and even show they engage with others around them.
Body image can impact a teen’s confidence, self-esteem and self-worth. Positive body image can reinforce good emotional health. This can lead to a vital foundation of self-acceptance and even a healthy attitude toward exercise, food and an overall balanced lifestyle. All of which can be a defense against the overwhelming impact of eating disorders and other factors that influence body image, such as social media and peer pressure.
Signs of Unhealthy Body Image
How would you know if your teen needs help? Take note of the following signs of negative body image:
- Always looking at their image or ‘imperfections’ in the mirror
• Avoiding social situations
• Obsessed with counting calories, taking up crash diets – Seeking reassurance for their looks repeatedly from others
• Talking negatively about their body, such as ‘I feel ugly’, ‘I wish I had a better body’ etc.
• Talking about seeking a cosmetic surgeon for cosmetic changes
• Obsessed with going to the gym or completely ignoring their obesity
Social media can also play a large role in the development of body image. It can be important to address what your teen is viewing on social media and to explore ways to limit unhealthy messages.
Social Media and Body Image
Social media is powerful. While all forms of media can contribute to the development of your teen’s body image, it is undeniable that social media has one of the most powerful influences. Teens use it to socialize, interact and communicate with their peers, friends, family and relatives. They use it as a form of entertainment. They use it as a source of current information. Unfortunately, some teens also use it as a means to bully and harass others. Regardless of how your teen is using it, monitoring can be very important.
The internet and social media may not be easily separated from the life of your teen. Recognize the power of social media and intervene as necessary.
