Alleviating Your Emotional Hurt with Therapy

Much like a physical injury, an emotional wound can also be healed when you receive the right treatment. Although it can be more complicated to ease emotional pain, it doesn’t mean it can’t be healed. Some people are skilled at hiding their pain. Others opt to engage in self-destructive activities such as drinking alcohol, excessively spending, or indulging in sweets for the purpose of numbing the pain. Some may resort to anger and revenge as a means of “getting even” with the source of their pain and hurt. There are many ways to approach our emotions, not all have to be negative.

Revealing the Truth about Emotional Hurt

There are a myriad of things that can hurt you emotionally. You may have been hurt by a distressing event such as the death of a loved one, unemployment, or a broken relationship. Regardless of the cause, your emotional pain can leave you hurting. It can be very understandable to feel angry, sad, bored, agitated, frustrated, disrespected, abandoned etc. You may even find yourself wanting to inflict self-harm as a means of putting an end to all the struggles. Many individuals will report experiencing symptoms of depression in conjunction with emotional pain. Some of these symptoms can include the before mentioned thoughts of self-harm, sad mood, low energy and motivation, appetite and sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating and lack of enjoyment in things you had previously enjoyed.

Emotional hurt can also manifest in physical symptoms. What you consider as health problems such as hypertension or lowered immunity could be the side effects of your emotional stress. At times, you may feel better, but only for a while. You may find that almost anything can trigger the pain all over again. Your emotional pain can be a powerful reminder of your human vulnerability.

Reinforcing Your Defense

There may be no need to hide your pain. It may also be of no help to indulge in something self-destructive to alleviate your pain, for after the temporary pleasure, you can feel you’re hurting again. There may also be no sense in fighting back to hurt others the way they hurt you. You have another option: therapy. In fact, when the symptoms are too overwhelming, therapy may already a necessity in helping you to become emotionally stronger and better able to manage the pain.

Healing can take time. But, when you’re able to acknowledge the pain, you may realize that treating your wounds is not something you wish to manage on your own. This may be a really big battle and no matter how you fight back, you may benefit from professional reinforcement to help you get through.
