The Vicious Cycle of Untreated Depression
Audio Version
Depression is a common mental health condition that impacts a large number of people. Despite there being more awareness about depression, there is still a stigma associated. Unfortunately, many people hide their depression, putting “on a face” rather than addressing their symptoms. Despair can overcome you, even when your life seems perfect. It can trigger an avalanche of negative emotions, and it can cause your physical health to decline.
Beating the Vicious Cycle
Missing the symptoms is common, many people with depression may be unaware. If you aren’t aware of your symptoms it’s unlikely that you will seek treatment. Unfortunately a large number of people with depression go undiagnosed and untreated.
Becoming more aware of the symptoms of depression can help you to recognize what is going on and seek treatment. Early intervention can make a world of difference, improving your prognosis and allowing you to find remission sooner.
Because depression is highly responsive to interventions, remission is possible. Experiencing symptoms of depression does NOT mean that you will struggle for the rest of your life. Intervening sooner rather than later can help to break the vicious cycle.
Symptoms of Depression
Many equate depression to feeling sad. While this is a part of depression, it isn’t everything. Some experience depression but never feel particularly sad, they experience depression more as feeling irritable.
Depression also impacts your appetite and sleep habits. Those with depression may find that they eat excessively or have no appetite. Some sleep all the time, others can barely fall asleep. You can feel sped up, as if you want to jump out of your own skin. Some feel slowed down, almost like they are moving through Jello.
Depression can make it difficult to focus and make decisions. You can feel fatigue and low motivation. A lack of interest in things you used to love to do is also common. Depression may even lead to thoughts of death or even suicide.
Being aware of these symptoms can help you to spot depression sooner rather than later. Early intervention is key.
