Overcoming Family Overwhelm

For many couples, settling down or starting a family means it’s time to start the life you always dreamed of. Many fantasize about this stage of life and all the joy it can bring. While life can bring us a great deal of happiness it can also bring us a lot of stress and responsibility. Balancing it all can be difficult and hard to do on your own.
Parenting Can Be Overwhelming
With so many domestic and personal concerns you need to attend to—financial matters, children, work—your hands are full 24 hours, 365 days a year. It isn’t easy to be a “perfect” parent when you have a home to manage, a job to keep, and hundreds of errands to do. If you can hardly get enough sleep, enjoy family time after dinner or during weekends, or talk to your children about their personal concerns, you are likely feeling overwhelmed.
Overwhelm and Relationships
Conflicts are “normal” for couples, but they can be more frequent when you and your spouse are overwhelmed. You may be burned out and walking on a tightrope that feels as if it can snap at the slightest provocation. With an overwhelming and stressful life at home and in the workplace, you probably have little time and inspiration to be romantic or to be extra-patient with your spouse. Talking may have become strained, as it often leads to arguments. Intimacy may have become obligatory and rare, prioritized below basic matters such as sleep or catching up on other tasks.
Finding Balance
Anyone can be easily weighed down and overwhelmed by the pressure of all these concerns, making you lose your balance. If you find yourself in this situation, you may not be able to find the balance on your own. Therapy can help.
