How to Choose a Therapist
that is the Right Fit for You
that is the Right Fit for You
Overcoming hurt, sadness, anxiety, excessive fear and other intense emotions can be easier said than done. It can be difficult to work through these types of challenges on your own, therapy can help.
Therapy has been found to be exceptionally helpful in treating intrusive symptoms of behavioral health conditions as well as working through various life challenges. While you may know counseling could help, it can be difficult to find the therapist that is right for you. When trying to find the right therapist, consider some of the following things;
- Feeling comfortable with a therapist and “clinic” or “practice” can be a good sign. The right therapist will likely leave you feeling cared for which can be essential to building trust, an important element for a successful therapy. You can generally tell based even on the first counseling session if your therapist seems to genuinely care. The setting of sessions is equally important; it is important that you feel relaxed and secure.
- A therapist with a personality that is a good fit for yours. That isn’t to say your therapist has to be just like you, simply that you feel their personality is a good fit for yours. When you feel comfortable with someone it will be easier to open up and be authentic. This can all be necessary to make progress toward your therapy goals. Everyone has their preferences and that is okay!
- One with the right training and experience. Many therapists will post information about themselves which allows you to read about their approaches and experience. This can help you to gauge whether a therapist may be a good fit for you and your therapy goals.
When these factors come together, there is a good chance you will feel connected to your therapist. During your first appointment feel free to ask questions that matter to you. Therapy is about you and your goals, be sure to share what those are and advocate for the change you want.

What is the difference between a counselor and a therapist?
There is no difference. This is a preference of wording, and either can be used interchangeably.
What happens at my first visit to a therapist?
You and the therapist meet each other and discuss your symptoms, contributing factors, and issues that you would like resolved. The therapist will have many questions during the first visit so they can get an “overall picture ” in order to be most helpful.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to get counseling?
No, no DR referral needed for most insurances!
The only exception would be if you are an Active Duty service member. In that situation, you would need a referral from your PCM.
You NEVER need a Doctor’s referral if you are: Tricare (Military Dependent or Retiree) or a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina beneficiary.
How confidential are counseling sessions?
Maximum confidentlial!
We take confidentiality VERY seriously!
Trust and Confidentiality go hand in hand, and in order to be of help, it is essential that you have and continue to build trust with your counselor/therapist.
a. For online counseling, we use a platform that is encrypted to HIPAA standards – which means no one can hack into or listen to our private conversations.
b. For in person counseling, we ensure that no one can hear what is being said in the office between you are your therapist. We have soundproofing items on our walls, and play music and have “noise” machines that cover all conversations.
c. We do not disclose information to ANYONE without your written permission*!
*Please note the law requires exceptions in cases of child abuse, etc. and these specifics are listed on the registration packet that you would review and sign before you see your therapist for the first session.
How do I know if I need counseling?
You may need counseling If you feel that you are not able to function, or function well. if you have symptoms/thoughts that weigh you down or keep you from having good relationships, these can all be indicators that you need counseling.
