Assessing Your Child’s Behavior Problems with an Expert

Audio Version

Being a parent, the physical, mental, and emotional health of your child are often your top concerns. As your child develops, these change as they adjust and respond to different life situations. Like adults, your child can also face difficult emotions like sadness, anxiety, or depression. Experiencing intense emotions can lead to concerning behaviors, especially with children.

How Often Do Children Experience Behavioral Disorders?

Statistics show that more than 15 million children and teens have behavioral disorders, but only one out of five receives treatment. Many factors account for these stats including the fact that some parents feel that behavioral problems and mental health can be handled by the family. Behaviors can also be written off as being part of “growing up”. Don’t let your child become a statistic.

It can be overwhelming to see your child struggling with their behavior. You aren’t alone, many find working with a counselor to be remarkably helpful. A trained therapist can assess what is getting in your child’s way and work with you both to move forward.

Getting Support from Others

It’s natural to look for comfort, support, and advice from relatives, friends, or your child’s school. Maybe you’re secretly hoping to discover that you share the same problem with others and to hear what solution they have tried themselves. Many even turn to seminars and reading to learn behavior management and conflict resolution skills.

While these steps are helpful in some ways, they are not generally a cure all. You may need to get an assessment from a mental health professional to identify specifically what is going on for your child and to develop an appropriate treatment program.
