When Bipolar Disorder Get Worse: Signs to Watch Out For

According to the John Hopkins Health Library, there are approximately 5.7 million Americans who have bipolar disorder. Whether you live with it or live with someone who suffers from the condition, it is best to be well aware of the signs to look out for so you can find the right help.

Bipolar Disorder 101

Unlike unipolar disorder where there is only one mood, bipolar disorder involves two: high (mania) and low (depression). Typically, high mood means happiness, contentment, and even euphoria; low mood can mean sadness, misery, or anger.

With bipolar disorder, the mood changes in complete conflict with events. For example, you might feel melancholic while watching a comedy show or you may find yourself jubilant in the middle of a funeral service. These mood whims are happening due to biological changes in the brain. They are uncontrollable conditions that can make it difficult for you to function. Fortunately, bipolar disorder is treatable.

The Symptoms Take Multiple Characteristics

Since bipolar disorder can assume two mood forms, the symptoms tend to vary depending if the condition is manic or depressive. The signs are differently manifested emotionally and physically.

The physical symptoms of bipolar disorder are evident in the behavior. During the manic phase, the symptoms may include restlessness, lack of concentration, and rapid speech. There can be the desire to set new projects and get involved in risky activities. On the other hand, the symptoms associated with the depressive phase are lack of interest, energy and concentration in activities once enjoyed, change in sleep or eating habits, and even thoughts of self-harm.

The emotional symptoms of the manic phase include euphoria, persistent happiness regardless of circumstances, agitation and feeling triumphant. On the contrary, the depressive phase is manifested in sorrow, worry, irritability, emptiness, and disinterest. The symptoms vary differently between the manic and depressive states. But, it can be possible for both states to be experienced at the same time.

Seeking Help to Ward off the Symptoms

Many patients spend time and money seeking the right treatment for this distressing condition, including online self-assessment tests. While they serve as a good starting point when you’re seeking help, they don’t substitute for what a well-trained therapist can offer as treatment options for bipolar disorder.
