What Exactly Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is a mood disorder characterized by extreme changes or “swings” in mood from very high (mania) to very low (depression). It can affect many areas of your life including your sleeping habits, energy levels, attitude, behavior and interactions with others. People with bipolar disorder can have times in which they feel very happy and energized and other periods of feeling very sad or hopeless.
Unlike unipolar depression where there is only one mood of concern (depression), bipolar disorder involves two moods or behaviors: high (mania) and low (depression). Typically, high mood means euphoria, erratic behaviors, excessive pleasure seeking or risk taking etc.; low mood can mean sadness, irritability, lack of interest, decreased energy and even thoughts of self-harm.
With bipolar disorder, one’s mood can change in complete conflict with events. For example, you might feel “down” while watching a comedy or you may find yourself “up” when not appropriate. These moods are happening due to biological changes in the brain. They are seemingly uncontrollable responses that can make it difficult for you to function. Fortunately, bipolar disorder is treatable.
The Physical and Emotional Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
The physical symptoms of bipolar disorder can be evident in behavior. During a manic episode, symptoms may include restlessness, lack of concentration, and rapid speech. There can be the excessive desire to begin a multitude of projects that will not be completed and the drive to engage in risky activities. On the other hand, the symptoms associated with the depressive phase are lack of interest, energy and concentration in activities once enjoyed, change in sleep or eating habits, and even thoughts of death.
The emotional symptoms of a manic episode include euphoria, persistent excessive happiness regardless of circumstances, agitation and feeling triumphant. On the contrary, the depressive phase is often characterized by sorrow, worry, irritability, emptiness, and disinterest. The symptoms vary differently between manic and depressive episodes. It can be possible for both states to be experienced at the same time.
