Tricare Dependents and Retirees
do not need a Doctor’s Referral
for Counseling

Experiencing emotional crises or difficulties can happen to anyone. Though when these crises are ongoing or bring on intense symptoms, they can become more than just difficulties. These intrusive symptoms may be related to depression, anxiety, trauma or extreme life changes. If you are facing any of these challenges, it may be helpful to seek the counselor of a trained therapist.

Finding the RIGHT Therapist

Counseling can be helpful and effective in finding the root causes of many intrusive symptoms. In order to get the most out of your counseling experience it is important to find the therapist that is the right fit for you. A good therapist is someone you can entrust with your innermost feelings and thoughts in order to get the best results. In all likelihood, you’ll look for someone who is capable of making you feel at ease while providing you the most appropriate and successful treatment tailored to your unique needs.

If you have insurance,  you will also likely want to be able to use it to see the therapist of your choice. Some insurances require a referral while others do not. Many individuals with Tricare are aware of this  process and may be left wondering if they need a referral to see a therapist for counseling. Good news, you do not!

TRICARE does NOT require dependents or retirees to obtain a referral for counseling. At this time Tricare does require a referral for Active Duty service members to receive counseling.
