The Search for Hope Can End with Counseling

Many individuals find themselves faced with challenges, sometimes ones that feel impossible to overcome. You may find yourself feeling lost along a road that seems too long, too tired to reach your goals that may look like mountains, far too high to climb. You may feel sad because you see no hope at all. No matter how you try you may find that nothing makes you feel better amidst the mess you perceive yourself to be in. You may even be wondering how you got to this dark and lonely place of hopelessness.

Living a Life with Hopelessness

While sadness can be a normal human emotion, feeling hopeless is not. Hopelessness can be one of the most frustrating feelings and is also a telling symptom of depression. If you find yourself experiencing hopelessness, your view of the future may seem to always be negative. There may always an expectation of failure, pain, difficulties, despair and dissatisfaction. You may be wondering how you can regain control or help yourself if you have a negative view of your own self. You may even find yourself experiencing the urge to give up, thinking there is no sense in even trying.

Hopelessness may lead you to believe that life is unfair. Despite working diligently enough, trying hard enough, caring enough and being good enough, you feel that you aren’t receiving the great results you may deserve. This kind of thinking can spirals you deeper into the mire of hopelessness. You could be wondering what the purpose of even trying is when you feel doomed to fail. Such words of discouragement may continue to ring in your ears as you relinquish all traces of hope left within you.

The Danger in Hopelessness

Numerous studies have shown that severe hopelessness can lead to self-sabotage. This does not mean that a person experiencing hopelessness will want to end his or her life. It does, however, indicated that hopelessness may cause a person to be at higher risk for self-harm. For a person feeling hopeless, self-harm may appear to be a better option than living with problems that don’t seem to have a solution or with conditions that don’t appear to be improving.

Finding Hope Beyond Hopelessness

Living hopelessly can be painful. You may feel completely deprived of motivation. If you feel hopeless and see everything on a downhill trend, you may need to reach out for help. Whether your hopelessness is felt in conjunction with other distressing conditions such as depression, or as part of your daily life, you may wish to reach out to a professional therapist for appropriate treatment.

The search for help is not a sign of weakness, it can be evidence of your courage, and your ability to admit you cannot control the circumstances in your life at this time. Help can come from your trusted support network, including family and friends. Often times the most effective help can come from a trained professional who can help you to find the underlying cause of your feelings of hopelessness.
