Should I Try Therapy Before
Medication Management?
Medication Management?
Realizing that you may need help can be overwhelming. It can take a lot of strength to reflect on where you are in your life and/or how you are feeling and know it can be better. While making this decision can feel overwhelming, choosing where to begin can be even more complicated.
There is no wrong place to start, however, many prefer to try therapy before considering medication management. Here are some reasons why:
- Therapy can address a wide variety of concerns. When you see a licensed therapist they are able to complete a full assessment and help you to identify what you need and what may need to change. Many different symptoms, diagnoses and problems can be treated in therapy. This makes counseling a wonderful starting point.
- Therapy can be long term if needed. Most counseling isn’t time limited. You can engage in sessions with your therapist for as long as you need to and remain connected for what is called maintenance therapy. This allows you to have a provider you can reach out to should you need to and can actually help your symptoms to remain in remission longer.
- Therapy can help to improve relationships. You can learn valuable relationship skills in counseling which can improve your relationships with others whether they are professional or personal. This can help you to feel accomplished and successful in a variety of life areas.
- You can learn many valuable skills in counseling. Therapy can be a place to learn and implement a variety of skills. You can learn communication skills, assertiveness skills, mindfulness skills, emotion regulation skills, distress tolerance skills etc. The list can go on and on. Counseling can help you to grow in ways you never imagined possible.
- Your therapist can help you find a prescriber. Medication management in conjunction with therapy can make a world of difference. Not all symptoms can improve through therapy alone. When you find a counselor you trust it can make finding the right prescriber even easier.
There are many, many benefits to counseling. Therapy can help you to address symptoms and challenges and start feeling like the best version of yourself. Therapy can be effective on its own, though there are times that medication management is needed to find remission from your symptoms.
