Freeing Yourself from the Clutches of Emotional Overwhelm

Freeing Yourself from the Clutches of Emotional Overwhelm

If you’re the type of person who is always aiming and achieving, chances are, it may feel as if there are always a million things to do and not always enough time to do them all. If you are so focused on meeting, even exceeding expectations or on setting new standards, you may feel stressed, burdened and even overwhelmed.

If there are other things that will complicate your life – a promotion that entails new responsibilities, a relationship or family trouble, or a serious ailment or loss of loved one – things may begin to feel as if they are too much to handle. You may feel as if you are like a ticking bomb that’s ready to explode at any time. You may find yourself wondering how you can lift the burden of these overwhelming emotions and begin to better enjoy your life.

All at Once

Contrary to what many people may think, overwhelm isn’t just a feeling that comes with problems. It can come when too many things are happening all at once, so fast you hardly have time to process everything. Even opportunities and successes, like a promotion, a new job or a prospering business can burden you with excessive amounts of responsibility, deadlines and worries. If you feel stressed and burdened already, and something negative happens, that event may feel as if it is the last straw. Before that happens, you can turn the tide by doing something concrete to prevent overwhelm.

Do you Show the Signs

When you feel like you’re ready to explode, it can be helpful to check your feelings and behavior that may indicate overwhelm. A person who is experiencing emotional overwhelm is likely to experience irritability, extreme anxiety, panic, even depression. When experiencing excessive amounts of stress you may be more likely to illogically react or blow your top over seemingly minor issues. Your overpowering feelings may stand in the way of doing work or making logical decisions. This may cause you to hurt people around you or fail to meet/complete your tasks. All these signs can further complicate your emotional overwhelm.

There is a Way Out

There are a few things that you may need to understand to restore stability in your life. One, overwhelm happens to many people at one time or another; you can choose to end it when you want to. Two, you don’t have to take everything in; you have the option to choose your battles or to say “no” when needed.
