Taking Steps to Improve Your Self-Perception
In our society it can seem as if you are bombarded constantly by an “ideal body” image. Very few individuals possess such a body which can lead to a great deal of distress and can be detrimental to your self-perception and self-esteem. Extreme cases of this can be seen in “surgeries gone wrong” which have been sensationalized by television, the media and the internet. Watching the videos, you may quickly realize that a lot of the people could have prevented their mishaps had they stopped after one or two surgeries. Many may think that these individuals are “obsessed”, though they are likely suffering from a poor self-image or self-perception. In many cases like this it can be argued that treatment by a therapist may have been more effective than a surgery.
Are you not happy with the way you look?
If you are not happy with the way you look, even when people think you look good, you may wish to seek professional help. This feeling can breed low self-esteem, which can be damaging both psychologically and physically. Having a negative view of self can destructively affect almost every aspect of your life, including your health, relationships, career and most especially, your thoughts and emotions. In extreme cases, having a negative view of self can lead to depressed mood and even thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Finding the Right help
While your physical appearance can significantly influence how you may perceive yourself, you may need to realize that there is more to having a positive body image or self-perception than how you look physically. This may be contributing to your difficulty in feeling content with the way that you look.
Your self-perception may have been developed over many long years. Your view of self can be influenced by your personality, self-criticism, your environment and/or the media that promotes near-perfect and unachievable appearances. You may not be able to change your perception of yourself through a series of cosmetic enhancements. You may benefit from the help of an experienced counselor in order to change your self-view.
The Importance of Having a Positive Self-perception
Even beauty queens have imperfections; having flaws is normal. If you are eager to improve yourself, that can be only natural. However, this can become problematic when you are so focused on achieving an unrealistic goal that you begin submitting to dangerous procedures or becoming saddened to the point of depression. If you have a distorted perception of yourself and you are struggling with low self-esteem as a consequence, it could help to turn to a counselor who can help you tap into the power of your own beliefs and thoughts in order to change how you perceive yourself.
Self-acceptance can be vital to having a confident perception of yourself and positive self-esteem. Unfortunately, changing your self-image that developed over the course of many years may not be a simple task. To prevent you from seeking drastic or damaging solutions, you may wish to first begin to understand yourself better from the inside. A licensed, independently contracted therapist can help you to accept yourself and to work on improving yourself self-esteem.
