Slowing Down the Mind: How to Truly Relax, Recharge and Sleep Well
Many people can take sleep for granted as it may come to them naturally without much effort. For some people, sleep can come with difficulty for a variety of reasons. Difficulty with attention, depression and/or being overly stressed may be causing sleep to evade you. You may need to work to put your mind to rest so sleep can come. Sleep is vital. You may find yourself experiencing a variety of negative consequences if sleep continues to remain out of reach. Though you may know you need sleep, it may feel as if it is easier said than done.
“The Restless Mind”
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that affects approximately 10 percent of the population. ADHD is often thought of as a childhood disorder, however, it will often times continue into adulthood. According to The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH, 2012) depression affects an estimated 16 million American adults representing 6.9 percent of the adult population. Stress, on the other hand, can be said to virtually affect everyone.
Statistics show that many are prone to sleeplessness by having a “restless” mind or by worrying frequently and/or severely. If you are struggling with sleep because it seems your mind will not rest, you may already know how necessary it is to calm your mind.
Slowing the Mind
Studies revealed that treatment of ADHD or depression can be more effective with psychosocial interventions. These interventions may be necessary to better manage symptoms and to address any other possible issues related to the disorder. If you have been managing ADHD all your life, you may have found some relief at one time or another through therapy.
If you have not treated these symptoms, it is not too late. If you are faced with depression, anxiety or stress, you don’t need to unnecessarily suffer, professionals are available.
Engaging in Therapy
If you feel any of the above mentioned symptoms apply to you, you may benefit from counseling. A psychotherapist can provide interventions that can help you gain more control over your behaviors and attention. Your counselor may also be able to help you learn to manage your emotions when they are intense or feel overwhelming.
Engaging in therapy may be helpful so you can learn to calm your mind, gain more control and to begin to get enough sleep. Having a racing mind may deter you from getting adequate hours of sleep and the rest that is crucial to relaxing and recharging your mind and body. Lack of sleep can lead to many biological and social complications.
