Most of the time, the proverbial “bad day” comes and goes without you noticing them; stress is after all a part of everyday life. There are, however, big blows or huge sudden changes in your life that are all at once too overwhelming – loss of a beloved, life-threatening malady, loss of your job or career, even pregnancy and motherhood, or change of school for young ones. It will not show weakness to say, “Help!” Everybody needs it from time to time. The wise person knows when to ask for it and does not suffer in silence. The worse thing to do is ignore the signs and keep everything inside. Be aware that extreme sadness and emotional turmoil can lead to an emotional crisis, which not only affects you, but everyone around you as well.
Minimizing Your Emotional Turmoil
Faced with responsibilities and expectations, you might want to “absorb” everything and keep them all bottled up inside. You try your best to appear your usual self, even when your emotions are slowly consuming you inside. You may switch from despondency to action to make everyone think you’re alright, even happy, by doing the things that you used to do. At the end of the day or when alone, however, you can’t sleep, eat or find pleasure in the things that you used to enjoy.
What can happen is for these symptoms to slip into anxiety or depression or for you to develop other unhealthy physical symptoms, or even transferring your emotional crisis onto someone else- spouse, family members, children, etc.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch Out for
Not sleeping and eating properly (not eating or overeating) can cause you to get physically ill and feel chronically tired; these are the usual early signs of distraught emotions. Lacking energy, you’re apt to be less interested in matters that used to be important to you – family, relationships and career. Ignoring these signs may lead to other symptoms such as anger management issues and mood swings, which can strain relationships and further exacerbate your emotional crisis.
Overcoming Emotional Crisis with Help
You may not notice the changes that can further complicate your crisis because you are too focused on your emotions. Listen to your inner voice and hear what your family and friends tell you. You can seek out professional help to validate their observation by going straight to Carolina Counseling Services Fuquay-Varina, NC where your symptoms can be evaluated and you can start your journey out of your crisis.
