Personality Disorders: Why You Need Help
Each of us has a unique personality that has developed through time. Most people have the flexibility to learn from past experiences and use them to change their behavior. It’s even acceptable to have different personality quirks.
There are, however, some who are unable to get along with other people because they have different beliefs and attitudes. They act that way usually due to early environmental situations, strong feelings, extreme thoughts, and unhealthy behaviors. They have difficulties in relating to situations, especially when confronted with stressful circumstances. Often, people would consider their actions as strange, unexpected, and even offensive. As a result, they end up having stormy relationships.
The Reality of Personality Disorders
If you belong to the latter group, you’re most likely to be suffering from a personality disorder. You’re part of the estimated 10% of the general population afflicted with some kind of personality disorder. Some of the common types of personality disorders include borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder. Those with antisocial personality disorder may pose harm to others while those diagnosed with borderline or paranoid personality disorder are three times higher at risk of self-harm than the average.
The symptoms vary for each type, ranging from mild to severe. Even if the signs are clear, you may have trouble facing up the disorder. For you, your thoughts and actions are normal. Your finger points at other people and blames them for the problems besetting your day to day life.
Certain things have been identified to contribute to the development of a personality disorder. This includes neurological and genetic factors, and history of childhood abuse or trauma. The condition usually becomes obvious in adolescence or early adulthood, but may already be present since childhood. The disorder isn’t diagnosed until 18 years of age because prior to this point your personality is still developing.
The Only Help You Need
No one likes to be told something is wrong about their personality. But, the symptoms don’t lie if you have frequent mood swings, difficulty developing and sustaining relationships, poor impulse control, or frequent angry outbursts. Regardless of type, personality disorder is a condition with a controversial diagnosis.
The exact causes are deep-rooted, making it difficult to treat the illness. It is also possible that other psychological health problems like depression and anxiety are masking the personality disorder. Whatever the case, treatment usually involves long-term counseling and treatment. For that, the help of a capable therapist is necessary to help pull you out from the degenerative state.
