Overwhelm at Work: The Power to Control What You Can
Anyone can be vulnerable to “overwhelm”. When you are balancing bad news, too many commitments, unresolved relationship issues, etc., it can feel overwhelming. At work, you may not only feel the pressure there, but also bring these “home” issues to work and add them to the stress you are already under. Any of these can significantly impact your emotional and physical health, thereby reducing your productivity. If you succumb to emotional overwhelm, you may end up losing what you are so striving to hold or keep.
The key is to learn to manage work pressure or stress. It may seem like you are powerless to do this since you can’t control everything in your environment. It helps if you will focus on the one area that you can control and that is YOU! How do you manage work stress to prevent overwhelm? Learn it from the experts.
Are you in the brink of being overwhelmed because of work?
If your goal is to keep your job in these hard times, to meet rising expectations or to step up in the promotions department, learn to recognize the signs of overwhelm. Are you feeling irritable or anxious most of the time? Do you often feel tired, can’t sleep, can’t eat and have difficulty focusing? Have you lost interest in work and are you experiencing physical pain or upset stomach?
If you say “yes” to several of these, then you are on the brink of emotional overwhelm, if you are not yet overwhelmed. If you’ll ignore these signs, these may lead to bigger problems. Work stress can make you more ineffective in the job, become unproductive and make you lose your self-esteem or confidence. It may also cause your physical health to deteriorate.
How do you gain control over yourself?
Focus on taking care of yourself. Initially, the most important thing is to pay attention to your emotional health. If the feeling of overwhelm is gone, the improvement of your physical health will follow. Conversely, when too many things happen all at once in your personal life (at home and in your relationships), your cup may runneth over sooner than later. There are several ways to achieve this; one proactive way is to seek professional help. Talking about your work-related problems with another human being can be cathartic.
If you live in North Carolina, you can find help from one of the non-judgmental therapists independently contracted by Carolina Counseling Services Fuquay-Varina.
