Guilt and Shame: Letting Go of What May be Holding You Hostage
One would be hard pressed to find someone who had never made a mistake. Making mistakes can be a good way to learn. You may hope for small mistakes while learning, though lessons that come with a high price are not easy to forget. The lessons you learn can make you a better person.
Guilt and shame may stop you from making the same blunders or offenses, however, these feelings can stop you from moving forward. You may find yourself bogged down by past mistakes and possibly even allow the ensuing feelings of guilt and shame to keep you hostage. You may benefit from learning self-forgiveness on your own or with the help of a professional.
The First Step to Emotional Healing
Letting go of feelings of guilt and shame can be important. This may only happen when you have learned to forgive yourself. Self-forgiveness can be a prerequisite for emotional healing. Even when your wrong decision, judgment or action has brought you or a person you love grief, you may need to forgive yourself. Self-forgiveness can allow you to start to heal and focus on yourself in an adept and objective manner. As you heal your mind from guilt and shame, you may find yourself better able to open up to positive things, first maybe to yourself and then to others.
Forgiving Yourself May Not Be Easy
If you are overwhelmed by a deep sense of guilt and shame, you might completely understand why forgiveness may not be easy. A serious mistake and ensuing intense feelings of guilt and shame can test your ability to forgive other people or yourself. With forgiveness, you may find yourself hurting less and you may experience less stress, anger and/or depression. You may be better able to sleep, allowing you to experience a renewed vigor and zest possibly leading you to start aiming and achieving again.
Rediscovering Self Worth with Help
Recklessness can bring serious injuries. Indulgence and the abuse of substances can lead to addiction. Infidelity can break trust and relationships. Regardless of how devastating, painful or bitter the repercussions are, you may need to move on. If you are overwhelmed with shame and guilt, you may be bound to continue to make the same mistakes over and over. Before this happens, seek the help of a counselor who can help you to find your own resolution and begin working toward forgiveness.
