Grief is a normal reaction when you lose someone or something that is important to you. Grief can result from many things, including loss of a loved one, miscarriage, relationship, children leaving home, death of a dream or ambition, job termination, a beloved pet, infertility or separation from relatives and friends. Since loss is inevitable, every person is bound to experience grief after a deep sense of loss. Most people bounce back given time. There are, however, people who need help to be able to overcome grief. It is important to know the signs to see if maybe you are among them.
Grieving Your Way
Just as grief is normal, bouncing back from it is also natural regardless of the intensity. The intensity, duration, pattern and the manner of grieving vary between individuals. There are people who don’t cry and keep their emotions bottled inside. There are those who wear their grief on their sleeve, and there are those who will let their grief get the better of them ruining their lives, hopes and dreams.
It is important to recognize the signs of being unable to move on. This may be the time when you may need a professional to provide assistance.
The Warning Signs
Warning signs that your grieving has become problematic can include emotional and physical symptoms.
Emotional symptoms are expected immediately after the traumatic loss, but it should wane in time. Symptoms associated with prolonged or excessive grief include extreme irritability, cynicism, coldness, detachment, inability to feel happy, and fixation with loss. Grief can also have some real effects on the body, which may mislead you to think you are sick – fatigue, digestive problems, chest pain, soreness and headaches. Most importantly, be aware when it is spiraling into full-blown depression.
Effects of Grief
While grief is a natural response after experiencing a heart-rending loss, its intensity should fade in time. When the intensity of your sadness persists, it can cause you to struggle on a day to day basis. Certain effects can be felt immediately once you lose your drive to go to school or work, or your interest to socialize. Long-term effects are generally grimmer in nature. Excessive and prolonged grief can drive you to severe depression and/or substance abuse (which may even include prescription abuse).
If you or a loved one is struggling with grief and the feeling seems to be “overstaying” or affecting your life to a great extent, don’t ignore the signs that you need help. Letting the long-term effects settle in can make things worse for you. Recognize the signs and call for help. Carolina Counseling Services Fuquay-Varina, NC is here to help you.
