Finding the Courage to Conquer Your Phobia
Almost everyone fears a thing or two – spiders, snakes, annual dental checkup, clowns, open spaces, or darkness. Most people, though, can manage to live with their fears. But, when your fear is so severe that it’s causing you anxiety and interfering with your normal life, your fear has become a phobia.
Rational Fear vs. Phobia
Nothing is wrong with fear. In fact, it is normal to experience fear as a human response to adapt to a perceived danger. It is basically a “fight or flight” response that alerts the body and mind to act for protective purposes.
With phobias, the threat is greatly exaggerated when, in reality, there is little or nonexistent danger. Phobias can be developed in childhood, but they can also manifest later in age about virtually anything, from insects to riding airplanes. Just thinking about what you fear most makes you anxious and you go to great lengths to avoid it. When you’re actually faced with the object or situation you fear, the overwhelming terror engulfs you automatically.
Understanding Your Phobia
Knowing what triggers your phobia is the first step to overcoming it. For example, if you are terribly afraid of snakes, you will choose to live in a place where you’re not likely to encounter one. Similarly, you will avoid going to places where people converge if you have a phobia of crowded spaces.
Phobias are common and they don’t usually disrupt activities. If your phobia doesn’t really pose as a problem, it’s probably nothing to be worried about. But, if it disables you from doing what you would otherwise enjoy, causes significant distress, interferes with your normal routine, and persists for at least six months, you may be in need of treatment.
Facing Your Phobia Bravely
Continuously avoiding the cause of your phobia is not only inconvenient, but it can also change your lifestyle and may cause you to lose opportunities. Instead, you may need to confront it head on. While self-help is a brave act worth trying, asking for professional intervention is even courageous. Treatment for phobias extremely works well, especially if your phobic attacks are severe and uncontrollable. It only takes a few sessions to see the immediate results.
What’s best for you is determined by factors such as the severity of your phobia, the cause, and its duration.
