The scars of a traumatic childhood can impact the life of a survivor from the first instance of abuse through adulthood and beyond. Regardless of the type of abuse, the wounds run deep and a single scratch can trigger a host of emotional issues for the survivor. No matter how long it has been, unresolved childhood trauma can negatively affect a person’s life as well as those around him or her.
Living with the Pain of Childhood Abuse
Childhood trauma can affect both the body and mind. If you’ve been subjected to early abuse or violence, you’ll likely grow up feeling perpetually in danger. Oftentimes, there’s difficulty in trusting others, especially if you’ve been betrayed by the very people whom you expected to nurture and protect you. Your heightened emotions give you sleepless nights and lower your immune function, increasing your susceptibility to a number of health issues. There is a greater possibility of developing at least one emotional problem like depression, anxiety or panic.
As an abused child, you probably grew up believing that you are worthless because that’s the message you got from your abuser. As an adult, you have poor self-esteem and most probably low level of social interaction. There is difficulty in forming and sustaining relationships. You can’t wholly embrace a loving partner even there’s no reason to be suspicious. There’s also the tendency to push loved ones away for fear of experiencing the same hurt again. Your pain makes you prefer to live in isolation and loneliness rather than become vulnerable and intimate with people.
Healing the Wounds of a Traumatic Childhood
There’s no reason to live with chronic distress caused by a traumatic childhood. Like everyone else, you’re a product of the past and you have a right to a present worth living. If your childhood is filled with traumatic experiences, whether it involved incidents of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, particularly with your parents, it doesn’t necessarily have to result in an unhappy adulthood or unhealthy relationships. You have the power to prevent the past in destroying your present and future.
Research has established that therapy can heal the wounds and pain of childhood abuse. With the right help and support, you can connect with others and develop healthy adult relationships without being haunted by “ghosts” of the bygone days.
