Saving Your Marriage from Marital Conflict
Many couples experience difficulties and conflict in their relationship due to marital discord and/or disagreements. This deterioration may be caused by negative events, such as; an affair, physical abuse, financial difficulties, and/or the death of a loved one. It is also possible that discord may slowly creep into the relationship. Couples may develop separate interests that push each other away and/or begin to have frequent or intense arguments. Such discord can lead couples to drift away from each other or look to others as their main source of support.
Symptoms of Marital Distress
There may be no such thing as a perfect marriage as it can be difficult to have another person be 100 percent “in tune” with your principles, attitudes, and expectations. Like many couples with high levels of marital distress, you may find yourself fighting frequently with little resolution.
Chronic marital conflicts can reach a point where one or both of you may become profoundly disappointed. You may stop doing the nice things that you had previously done for each other, things may seem as if they are going from bad to worse. You may find yourself experiencing many losses in your relationship such as; loss of friendship, trust, your sexual connection and/or communication. Other signs of marital distress may include; contempt, violence, and/or emotional withdrawal. Such distress may even lead you to feel that your marriage is failing.
Altering the Negative Direction of an Impaired Marriage
Marital conflict can have a powerful impact not just on the couple themselves but on the entire family as well. Unresolved or poorly resolved conflicts can affect most members of the family. Regardless of the causes of marital discord, it can lead to sadness, anxiety, and depression. Children raised in homes with high levels of conflict can also develop problematic behaviors that can impact their functioning. Without resolution, marital conflicts can lead to a descending progression, eventually resulting in divorce or separation.
In most situations, the downward cascade can be altered. While it’s true that you can work to restore your marriage by finding some personal fulfillment and making some changes on your own, it may take a professional to help you and your spouse resolve marital conflict and move forward in a positive direction. Your marriage may benefit from the counseling services of a credible therapist.
