What’s Happening in School - Understanding Your Child’s Behavior at Home
There are parents who are constantly called by teachers and school authorities regarding their children’s disruptive behavior in school. In cases like this, the parents involved need to determine whether their child is just going through a normal adjustment period or if the child possibly has oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) – a condition that will lead to anger and tantrums both at home and in school.
Signs of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in the School Setting
If you suspect that your child’s difficult behavior in school and at home is more than just a normal passing phase, take a look at the symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder. Try to find out if your child is suffering from this condition so you can reach out for help.
Children who suffer from ODD lose their temper often and frequently argue with adults and authority figures. They also deliberately disobey rules. Most of the time, children with ODD will do things to annoy others and yet they themselves are easily annoyed and touchy. Children with ODD often blame others for their mistakes. They are consistently angry and resentful about everything, and they do things out of spite.
Behavioral Problems at School and at Home
Children with ODD will have marked problems a school. ODD in school children is characterized by defiance towards adults and physically aggressive behavior towards their peers. It is usual for them to be involved in fights with other children in school, and they will have difficulty getting along with other kids.
What is needed
In some cases, the anger in children with ODD is triggered by a learning disability or an inability to use skills that are needed in their day to day school activities. Sometimes the disruptive behavior is aggravated when affected children feel there are expectations they are not meeting. There can be many other contributing factors and probably most you (as a parent) are not aware of.
Oppositional defiant disorder need not be a permanent condition; children do move on from it. However, they need a nurturing, consistent, psychologically supportive environment at home. They need to develop affirmative and caring relationships with the adults around them, and they need to learn new ways of expressing themselves other than tantrums and inappropriate behavior. These things are not easy to provide when a parent or a teacher has to deal with a child’s disruptive behavior all the time. The good news, if you call Counseling Services at Fuquay Varina your child will get the necessary help.
